He mihi aroha ki a tātou katoa,
Maori values and principles alongside te reo Maori have endured and seen us through the new millenium. It's important we foster Mātauranga Maori and keep ourselves focused and working hard towards the goals put forth by our ancestors in Te Tiriti o Waitangi to ensure our mokopuna in the decades and centuries to come will always have a place to call home, a turangawaewae. It is the work we do today to educate, empower and enlighten ourselves that will ultimately uplift our society and Aotearoa as a whole. We encourage every single Maori and Pacific student at the University of Auckland to grasp the opportunities, skills, knowledge, ideas and wisdom that is found here and focus on achieving the maximum potential academically, physically, socially, culturally and politically.
I've heard many a great person say, "If I can do it, anyone can!" My studies at the University of Auckland have been valuable to my life, personal development and career. Being a Maori girl from South Auckland, parents from village areas of Ahipara, Rangitukia, and Ruatoria there were many paths that I could have taken. I'm grateful for all of my journeys. Opportunities to travel the world, meet people, see new places, and experience different cultures have been marvellous. I have no regrets for any lessons I've learned in the class room and in life. Kia toa, kia maia, kia manawanui.
Arohanui Abigail (Te Rarawa / Ngati Porou)
