Darl is a pioneering theorist on social and technical connectivity and has published articles on the connectivity metaphor in Organization Studies (2008, 29, 1, 127-144) and 'requisite connectivity' in Organizational Dynamics (37, 2 April-June, 2008, 181-189). He is currently studying the links between connectivity and performance in distributed work teams in global firms. He supervises research on how much connectivity is necessary and/or optimal in a variety of work and social contexts, including how groups and organisations bridge connective gaps and manage distance. Darl has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sydney and in 2012 will take up a Visiting Fellowship at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.

He serves as Senior Editor of the University of Auckland Business Review. As an Academic Facilitator for business growth and export programmes at the ICEHOUSE, he has co-authored and edited a popular book on business growth, called Changing Gears (Auckland University Press). Darl teaches "Managing Organisations and People" (BUSADMIN 771) in the Executive MBA, a graduate Special Topic course (MGMT 725) on "Globally Distributed Work" and an award-winning undergraduate course called "Management in Action," using on-line business simulations (MGMT 301).
